How to Register with FBR in Pakistan – Step-by-Step Guide (2025)

If you're earning in Pakistan whether you are a salaried employee, freelancer or business owner you have to registered with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is important need. It helps you get your National Tax Number (NTN) and allows you to file taxes legally and safely.

Registering with FBR has become much easier from previous methods, thanks to their online portal. You don't have any need to go to their offices for registration. In this blog, I’ll guide you through the FBR registration process in just 4 simple steps

Step 1: Required Documents

If you want to be a filer make sure you have this basic documents. 

  • CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card)

  • Active email address and mobile number

  • Business details (if applicable)

  • Proof of address (utility bill or rental agreement)

  • Bank account details (for NTN registration)

Step 2: Register on the FBR IRIS Portal

The FBR uses a system called IRIS that handle and manage tax affairs online.

  1. Visit: https://iris.fbr.gov.pk

  2. Click on “Registration for Unregistered Person”

  3. Enter your:

    • CNIC

    • Mobile number

    • Email address

  4. You’ll receive OTP codes (one on your phone and one on email)

  5. Enter the OTPs to verify and create your account

๐Ÿ“ You’ll be issued a User ID and Password. Keep them safe! 

Disclaimer: 

Don't share you OTP code with anyone.  

Step 3: Apply for NTN

After registering on IRIS you have to log in using your credentials ( The special id username and password) 

  1. Go to “Registration” on the left-hand menu

  2. Select “Form for Registration”

  3. Fill in:

    • Personal details

    • Business info (if any)

    • Bank account details

    • Address

  4. Attach required documents (CNIC, proof of address etc.)

  5. Submit the form

Once your registration approved, your NTN number will be issued automatically. You can download your Registration Certificate from the portal.

Step 4: Start Filing Your Tax Returns

After receiving your NTN and activating your account, you can now:

  • File annual income tax returns

  • Generate tax payment challans

  • Check your tax profile

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Be sure to file returns on time to avoid penalties and stay on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).

Registering with FBR is now a fast, online process that takes less than an hour if you have everything ready. Whether you're a freelancer, salaried person or business owner.  It’s your responsibility to stay tax compliant and contribute to Pakistan’s economy.
